Why Are Fasteners and Thread Specifications Important to
Designers, Engineers, and Manufacturers?
A fastener is any device or method for holding parts together. Screws, bolts and nuts, rivets, welding, brazing, soldering, adhesives, collars, clutches, and keys are all fasteners. Each one fastens in a different way. Some fasten parts permanently; others allow for disassembly and adjustment. Screws and other fasteners have so many uses and have become so important that engineers, drafters, and technicians must become familiar with their many various characteristics and forms, as well as with the conventions for drawing them
